Seacastle Chassis operates its chassis leasing business through Trac Lease, Inc. Our current chassis fleet totals approximately 264,000 chassis as of January 1, 2008.
Lease Overview
Customers interested in new equipment may choose from long-term leases of varying durations, typically between three and eight years. To satisfy customers' peak or seasonal requirements, however, short-term leases are also available. For customers who require daily or weekly chassis rentals, we operate chassis pools at major intermodal depots.
Chassis Pools
Trac Lease has the largest network of neutral chassis pools in the country. We have more than 70,000 chassis offered to customers on a per trip basis, covering both domestic and marine chassis requirements.
We have two "metropools", or networks of locations in the New York metropolitan area and the Gulf region where customers can pick up and drop off marine chassis at various locations throughout each respective region. We have an extensive rail ramp neutral pool program with exclusive pool offerings on the CSX ramps, and strong coverage of both the BNSF and Union Pacific railroads. We also provide a neutral pool of domestic (53') chassis serving BNSF, CSX, CN, KCS, and FEC facilities.
Fleet Management
Many of our chassis customers have turned to us to help them manage chassis that they own and lease. We offer management services through Trac Lease, Inc., which uses our proprietary PoolStat® system to aggregate chassis activity data from over 500 locations around the country and report daily on this activity, processing more than 3.1 million transactions monthly. Customers contract with us to track their chassis nationally and determine usage patterns, ongoing requirements and overall fleet efficiencies. Our North American network of offices and relationships and our industry experience enables us to provide logistics services in order to facilitate the movement of chassis to meet our customers' needs and optimizing their asset utilization.
We also assist our customers in the formation and running of cooperative chassis pools. Under these pooling arrangements, each participant is required to supply a fair share of equipment to the pool relative to its usage. We provide, among other things, field staff to assist in the repositioning of chassis as well as overseeing the maintenance and repair process. Logistics support is handled by our regional planning center in Princeton using PoolStat's® forecasting module.
